Emergency Preparedness

Why, What and How Advice for RVM Residents

The articles presented on this page are a first installment of information on preparing for emergencies and disasters caused by natural hazards.  They are part of an Information and Operations Manual being created by the Residents Preparedness Group.  Additional topics and expanded information will be added in the near future.

Manual Overview (02-22-22)

Initial Design Parameters v3 Goals:  The manual is intended to be:

  • A source of readily accessible, useful information for residents and coordinators
  • Internet-based and maintained, with simple transformation into paper documents
  • A “living document” – easily modified and updated

In order to achieve these objectives promptly and efficiently, the following structures and procedures are to be adopted.  Some will be in effect immediately, others will be developed over the course of the project.  Modifications will be made as dictated by experience.

Structure and Content

The major topics addressed and their organization are shown in the figure below.

The Information section is envisioned as being the largest component, providing access to all of the information that a resident would need to prepare for and respond to an emergency or disaster.

The Coordinator Network section is similarly designed to provide volunteers with the information needed to meet their responsibilities.

The Organization and Communication sections will provide concise descriptions of those aspects that can be incorporated into the other sections by linking.  This will reduce duplication, and allow the reader to follow the most efficient path to assemble needed information.

Format:

Topics within the main headings will be developed in the format of 2-page (one printed sheet) documents (which may be referred to as “Information tiles” or just “tiles”).  There will be three types of tiles: broad introductory overviews, primary topical summaries, and secondary expansions-of-detail documents. These may be further supported by background or resource documents in whatever format is most effective.

  • The text used for electronic links should also serve as an adequate reference in a print version.
  • Colors used should be able to be rendered in gray-scale or black and white without loss of information.
  • Standard formatting should identify source, date and version information.
  • The initial web presence will be in the form of viewable and downloadable PDFs
  • Default font is Palatino Linotype 12-pt

A New Resource

A New Resource for Emergency Preparedness

The Residents Preparedness Group (RPG) has released the first installment of its RPG Manual, an information and operations handbook. The manual is an introduction to key natural hazards (Why Prepare, and for What), and basic instructions for being prepared in terms of Water, Food, Sanitation, and Medical issues (What to do and How to do it). There are also supplements on emergency communications and first aid assessment techniques. Additional topics (e.g., Power Outages and Go-Bags) and expanded information on RPG and preparedness in general will be added in the near future.

To mark the Spring Emergency Awareness Program, the Resident Preparedness Group (RPG) has released the first installment of its planned RPG Manual.  It is the first step in creating an information resource for residents interested in emergency preparedness, and for RPG volunteers.

It is designed to provide easy entry into the preparation process, starting with basic instructions and explanations of key topics, and eventually adding supplementary and more detailed information.

The format is that of a website, with the individual components designed for convenient updating and for printing out as a document manual.

The contents are developed from a combination of general and RVM-specific preparedness materials, and are reviewed by both RVM staff and RPG Coordinators and leaders.

In addition to a “Why Prepare?” introduction, the initial topics addressed at the basic level are Water, Food, Sanitation, and Medical.  There are also supplementary sheets on emergency communications and first aid assessment techniques.

Topics to be addressed in the near future are Power Outages and Go-bags (plus other evacuation issues).  Both of these require close coordination with RVM’s emergency planning and response program.

The currently available sections apply generally to both cottages and towers.  However, some of the topics being developed will require separate write-ups for the different residential settings.

There is general agreement that a longer-term goal is to have a preparedness information resource available on MyRVM.  However, to expedite development, the more flexible and accessible site of The Complement is being used as a platform.

The RPG Manual will also house organizational and procedural information about other aspects of RPG and general preparedness.  Some of that is linked to the current material, and more will become available with the expected redesign of the website.

The Manual is intended to be both a community resource and a community product.  Comments, suggestions, or contributions can be emailed to rpgrvm@gmail.com, or submitted through the RGP Coordinator network.
