COMPLEMENT UPGRADE SITE
This post provides a platform on which to view and review discussion of the ongoing upgrade and images or examples of prototype site components.
Target: To have the major modifications in place for the October issue, so that they can be used in displays and handouts for the Opportunity Fair, Oct 10-12 (a table has been requested for the Complement)
Please use the REPLY function at the end of the article to submit comments or suggestions.
Front page proposed content revisions:
The list(s) and image(s) here will be updated as the project proceeds
Proposed actions, 8/14/23 —
- Place contents list, with links, on the front page — prototype presented below
- Add a link to Archives or Back Issues
- Revise the names of sections (eliminate PREPARE, revise N&V, A&I)
Front Page Appearance modifications —
The figures below illustrate some possibilities.
A lighter background may give a more “energetic” feel, and there are a wide variety of text treatments available — fonts, colors, and special effects.
We need to settle on a basic approach and then fine-tune it.
The plan is to have an announcements page to send out on RVMlist that would have the contents (titles) from the boxes on the front page in a single vertical column, and would also have the front page header information. Below are two examples, drawn up by George. These are envisioned as having ONLY a link to the front page, which would have the links to the individual articles. This would permit a more compact format, which could be viewed without scrolling (depending on browser settings). See the alternative formulation and comments to the right.
The example below is similar to what we do now, with the sections listed and the titles linked to each item. However, this would (if possible) include the front page header image and linked menu. However, so far we have not figured out how to paste an image with a live link into email. There’s probably some sort of template that could be used, but we need expert assistance.
This version may be longer than the ones at left, and the section headings (which need to be redefined if kept) are somewhat redundant with the header menu.
This announcement page could be used ‘as is’ for the Archive link to the issue contents, although it would be a minor effort to create one from the front page table of contents if another format is used. In terms of deciding on announcement (and front page) format, the fundamental question is, what will do the best job of attracting people to the Complement, and encouraging them to read more once there?
